Open House
Everyone is congregated in the spacious auditorium of the SHIELD Academy. The noise level is probably a decibel below deafening and the lights are probably a little dimmer than what might seem normal for this time in the evening, but it doesn't seem to bother anyone as they just carry on. There are banners strewn about welcoming all first years to a new chapter in their lives while others welcome the others back for another year at the Academy. Refreshments are served up on stage while other tables set up around the massive room are home to pamphlets and flyers for clubs and classes. Special electives and advertisements for training sessions are also littered amongst the tables.

Make a few friends, find old ones, look into clubs that catch your interest. This is open house for all returning students and prospective students, so hang out, hit up others and just mingle!

"It's never too early to get your name out there," Gwen said tucking some hair behind her ear. "I'm Gwen, and you look new." She smiled at the girl she didn't recognize knowing how overwhelming the welcome party could be. She remembered her first day two years ago, watching the upperclassmen hand out flyers, using their special abilities and wondering just what exactly she had gotten herself into.

"Believe me, I'm feeling very new." Considering almost no one close to her age seemed to look nearly so confused as she is, it's impossible not to. And that's without any displays of powers to layer on top of it. At the moment Virginia is just focused on what she can handle, which right now is talking to one of the candidates for student government.

"My name's Virginia. I just transferred." From a school where she hadn't felt nearly so lost or purposeless. She gives the poster a wistful smile, silently wondering if she wouldn't be doing the same thing in her old school had her life not taken a very different direction this summer.

"Welcome to Sheild Academy," Gwen says noticing the look on Virginia's face when she looks at the poster. "Are you interested in student government? We have a lot of positions open and it's a great way to meet people.

"Oh, no." Which isn't the truth at all, even as Virginia insists. She's just very aware of her situation, which is why she shakes her head. "I mean, like I said, I just transferred. Even if I were interested, I don't think anyone is going to vote for the new girl."

She almost starts to hand the poster back, but thinks better of it. Gwen is still going to be running, so it would be rude to try and return it now. "But good luck with your campaign. What position were you looking to take?"

"You never know, last year the class treasurer was a transfer. If you have a good platform usually people take these seriously." Gwen smiles again, something about this girl makes Gwen want to take her under her wing. "Besides you don't have to run for anything. I'm going for class president."

"Really?" Huh. Something like that would have never flown at Virginia's old school, but maybe the Academy is different in more ways that she thought--particularly since Gwen, a third year according to the poster, is running for the top spot.

"That's pretty ambitious." Wild enough to spark inspiration in Virginia, and she looks over the other girl, considering for a moment. "Okay then. What's your platform?"

"Well you don't get anywhere in life if you're not ambitious," Gwen said smile still on her face. Though to be honest there usually was a smile on her face, infuriatingly cheerful according to her friends.

"I want to get more funding for student run organizations," she explained. "We could be doing so much more if we had sufficient funds."

The words definitely ring true, and Virginia can think of a few people she's met who have been ambitious--usually in less than desirable ways. But with Gwen there's also a sense of genuineness, something that makes it seem like she actually wants to do good rather than just looking to top the student hierarchy. It's why Virginia tosses in her own ideas, rather than just turning away.

"I think every organization has that problem. You might want to look into where your current funds are being spent in that case." At her old school, Virginia had found a bit of waste in terms of spending. She had planned to overhaul the budget, but that obviously isn't an option now. "Make sure it's all being spent thoughtfully. You may have more than you realize, especially if you're willing to go further and see about getting sponsors."

Which all may sound like she's trying to derail Gwen's idea, but it's actually the opposite. "Having a airtight budget that still needs feeding is going to be your best approach to getting money. If they can't find any holes, they have less reason to tell you no."

Those are all really great ideas and she's surprised to hear them coming out of another student. Not everyone hear is as ambitious as she is or as insightful.

"You realize that now I'm really going to not let you walk away from student government right?" She grins and loops her arm through Virginia's and leads her over to a set of chairs because if she's going to pick her brain they are going to be sitting down. "Those are really great ideas. Something a treasurer would be amazing at. As far as I know you'd be running unopposed.

Compliment aside, Virginia doesn't exactly expect to suddenly find someone pulling her aside by the arm as if they've known each other for ages. At the same time though, she doesn't really mind it. That Gwen actually appreciates her assessment is just as much of a surprise, but thankfully a pleasant one.

"I can't really complain; if I do end up running, it'd be good to have the support of another candidate." If, although Virginia can't quite keep her smile in when Gwen goes on. "Really? I know treasurer can't be everyone's favorite position, but I'd think there'd be at least one other person running for it."

"I haven't heard anything yet, usually we have an idea of whose interested in running," Gwen told her. "Though if you share those kinds of ideas with people you would be a shoe in."
