SHIELD Academy
Open House
Everyone is congregated in the spacious auditorium of the SHIELD Academy. The noise level is probably a decibel below deafening and the lights are probably a little dimmer than what might seem normal for this time in the evening, but it doesn't seem to bother anyone as they just carry on. There are banners strewn about welcoming all first years to a new chapter in their lives while others welcome the others back for another year at the Academy. Refreshments are served up on stage while other tables set up around the massive room are home to pamphlets and flyers for clubs and classes. Special electives and advertisements for training sessions are also littered amongst the tables.

Make a few friends, find old ones, look into clubs that catch your interest. This is open house for all returning students and prospective students, so hang out, hit up others and just mingle!

Sam's not really a party person, not like this anyway, so the crowds are starting to get to him. He's on the periphery of the crowds, mostly, looking for the few familiar faces he expects to find and smiling at people he doesn't know. Someone's gotta keep an eye out for the newcomers after all, make sure no-one takes too much advantage of them.

He's also got a handful of flyers for first aid courses and a couple of the sports teams, baseball and athletics, just in case he spots anyone likely.

"Sam Wilson!"

Lydia Martin has a hand on one hip, an arched brow, and a double stack of flyers in her hand.

"If you're not in Mathletes this year, I'm going to cry. Do you want that on your conscience?"

"Hey, Lydia. Come on, you know I got enough to do already. Besides, I do maths in class, why would I want to do it out of class?"

He waves his own stack of flyers, although as he's mostly teasing it's accompanied by a grin.

"If you're pestering me, you must not be having much luck with the freshmen."

"Colleges like well-rounded curriculars, and I'm pestering you because you're pretty much the best when it comes to spatial problems." She flutters a hand absently. "Don't you worry about the freshmen, I have my eye on a few, and not just for Mathletes, but Science Club, too."

Lydia, while not an avid participant in team sports (she's more of a figure skating sort of girl), is most definitely a supportive spectator. Look for the girl in the stands with the biggest sign (or at least, the most glitter) and it's probably her.

"You gonna go to BLT's thing?" Her shorthand for Billy/Loki/Tommy.

"You know I don't plan on college. But seeing as it's you asking, I'll think about it, okay?"

Sam's plans tend to involve joining up as soon as he's old enough, and although he's not exactly talkative on the subject it's not exactly a huge secret after all. He does appreciate the effort Lydia puts into supporting the assorted teams, though, and it's not like he can't drop out if it turns out to be too much.

"I don't know. I guess I could, but it's not really the sort of thing I usually have much time for. Then again, classes haven't even started yet. Why?"

"This is SHIELD Academy, Sam. You think they're just going to look you over and expect enlistment? When you sign the paperwork to serve in the military, they're going to look at you for officer material."

Lydia's assessment is unflinching but in the next moment she lets out a little laugh. "Are you kidding me? Those boys throw the only parties who are even close to being as good as mine, it's the first one of the year, and you know you don't want to miss it."

"I don't think it's gonna be quite that easy, but maybe you're right. I'm still not saying yes, though. Not until I know how much free time I've got this year."

It's pretty wry, though. Sam's never been able to turn down people who need his help, after all, and Lydia does have a point. He shrugs, although he looks pretty cheerful.

"You know they don't really do anything for me, but I guess there's a chance I might be able to catch up with some more people. Hard to find anyone in this crowd."

"That's all I can ask." Lydia says cheerfully, with regard to him at least considering Mathletes. She's not banking on him joining, but at least she had to try.

"Parties do for anyone as much as they let them do. But hey, getting in the door is half the battle." Another smile for him, and a pat on the arm if he allows it. "I'll see you there, okay? I gotta get the rest of these fliers distributed."

Guess who else is handing out flyers? Ororo's got quite a few in hand herself, but in addition to advertising clubs, she's also got some general help ones for the newcomers. She's in student government again this year, after all.

In any case, it's not too long before they cross paths on the floor. Ororo gives Sam a smile, heading over to him after he finishes speaking to a freshman.

"Hello, Sam. Find anyone promising for the sports teams you're on this year?"

Ororo's one of Sam's oldest acquaintances, from before he'd even heard of this place, so it's nice to see her again. He smiles back.

"Hey, Ororo! One or two, but most of the new kids are too distracted to really talk about it right now. Too much noise, too much new stuff to process, I guess."
